As reminiscent of 1940’s resort wear as it is steadfast British military garb, the high waisted and deep pleated form of the Gurkha short is breezy and louche, a juxtaposition of it’s almost feminine silhouette with its robust cloth and heritage. Ours are cut high, with the classic side fastening self belt waist, double pleats on the front and single pleats at back, and a wide leg that falls just past the knee without a turn up. Made in Japan from a heavy cotton twill, they are as hardy as their military past, and soften with each wash and wear to become a slouchy, draped garment to tackle the summer heat.
It is a style that lends itself to tailoring as easily as it does casual wear, the fullness of hip and position of the waist echoing the classic proportions of a dress trouser. With an open necked OCBD, Hopsack blazer and penny loafers, it has weekend elegance for days, or with a patterned camp collar shirt, espadrilles and a straw lid, it is all resort elegance.
